Why Teens Get Acne
Teenagers get acne due to higher levels of hormonal activity at this phase of life. The increase in certain hormones results in an over stimulation of the sebaceous glands, which are the glands responsible for producing the sebum, or natural lubricant for skin and hair. The sebum then becomes trapped in the tiny pores of the face, shoulders and even the back. Once the sebum hardens in the pores it is known as whiteheads or blackheads. When bacteria is present the pores will develop into acne, which is characterized by swollen and inflamed pustules. Some teens are more prone to acne than others and this may have some genetic component.
